Februarch

This week of Februarch has been challenging! I started a new job on Monday which has left me emotionally and physically drained just by the sheer fact that it is change, and I don't do well with change (even with change I choose). And I don't do well when my sleep schedule is messed up - and even though I got my needed 8.0 hours I was still a bit sleepy. So Monday and Tuesday were very low key in terms of walking - other than that I did to the bus and to work, and back (which actually likely adds up!)

On top of that on Monday I my Soccer Coach's meeting for the Spring season and on Tuesday I had Theology on Tap. Today was the first day I had nothing and so couldn't pretend that I was too busy and tired to walk and run. And so I walked 1.0 miles then ran 1.0 miles, jogged 1 lap, and walked 1 lap. Total Workout: 2.5 miles in 30:58 401cals 1%.

Mile 1400.0!

Today was a 10.0 mile race. Since I was not properly trained for a 10 miler (my bad) I ended up doing one hard 5 mile loop of the lake and calling it a day. It was so different for me to start something but not finish it. But at least I had decided pre-race that I was just doing 5. It made it easier to run and not worry. I knew I could do 5 so I wanted to make them a good 5.

Right before the run started I stood in a long line for the restroom. The National Anthem played, though it was awkward as there was no flag to look to - and so a mutually agreed on place to stare was towards the van that played the anthem. I used the bathroom and ran over into the large mass of runners a few seconds after the official start and eased on in by the 9:00 pacer. I ran along looking for Ryan who was wearing an orange long-sleeved shirt - and it turned out lots of people were wearing orange. Luckily his shirt was a dull orange, not neon. A few minutes before the 1st mile marker I found him and ran hard,  weaving through runners to catch him. I caught him but couldn't cross the 6 feet so I shouted and waved "Ryan!" and he saw and soon thereafter I moved over and we were able to run side by side.

We passed Mile 1 and my watch said 8:45. We were only a few paces back from the 8:30 pacer so we kept with him and we felt faster. We stopped for some water at the water station for a few seconds, and picked it up for a bit and crossed Mile 2 at 17:10 -- averaging 8:35 pace. When we reached the next flag, still behind the 8:30 pacer, we calculated how long the mile took and we did it in 7:40! Ryan said "Phew! I thought this pace was harder. Glad it really was!". I was glad it was too because I felt like I was exerting a lot of effort to keep the pace, and I told him that I may have to run slower so he should not let me hold him back. We ran up a slight uphill then ran down a downhill grade for the next mile. For a while I was just trying to keep pace with Ryan, but on the downhill I felt really good and just ran what my body wanted to do. Ryan said, "You're pulling away. Don't let me hold you back." I did run out in front of him for a bit, but then slowed down some so he could catch up. There was no point in my running alone, especially since I wasn't doing it for a final time and since I had the opportunity to run it with Ryan. I enjoyed running side by side with him.

For the final mile we went up and over a hill and then down hill and eased on into the parking lot, ran a round about route through the Finish Line/Loop area and I completed my 5.0 miles in 42:24. I grabbed some Gatorade and Ryan gave me a shirt layer, then off he went and off I went to pick up my bag. I took my time changing then I stood near the finish line waiting for Ryan to come around. At 1:23:XX he was in sight and coming around the home stretch. I took a few pictures, cheered for him, then met him after the finish line.

We immediately went over to the barn where they had free food - pizza, soup, and bananas. We sat and ate and felt warm and tired. I felt like I had done all 10 miles. We walked to the bus pick up and shuttled back to our car. On our way home we stopped at the grocery store for bacon, eggs, sausage, gravy and when we got home Ryan made us a yummy late lunch. I then napped - for an hour which transitioned into 2.0 hours.

While we sat in the barn eating our food I was saddened to think that I was so close to completing 1400.0 miles - my goal I set for myself was to reach it today. But then I realized between all the walking we had done I might have gotten it -- and so once home I plugged in all the extra walking we did between our car to the shuttle, the barn to the boathouse (twice), around the barn area waiting for the race, and from the shuttle to the car. Added all up it came in just over 1.0 miles! It made me so happy to know that indeed I had reached 1400.0 miles and that Ryan was with me for it! :)

I worked hard for about 45 minutes today and rewarded myself with a lot of happiness, sleep, and general nothingness for the remaining 23 hours and 15 minutes.

Pre Race Walk

After working my last day at a job that I've worked at for 5.3 years we went to the local restaurant/bar for 2 hours to hang out one final time. It was nice seeing everyone one final time and it was hard to believe I was the one whose last day it was. There have been other days like this, but it was always for someone else. But I am sure soon enough it will sink in.

After laying around unmotivated for a few hours I got up off the couch around 9:30 and walked on the treadmill. I did 1.5 miles in 21:59 246cals 1%.

Run Baby Run

I did my daily reading and reflection as I walked 2 laps. Then I jogged a bit at 5.0 and 5.5mph then upped it to 6.0mph for a solid run. I did a lap at 6.5 and then slowed back down to 6.0 but then LMFAO's "Party Rock Anthem" song came on so I bumped it up to 6.5 again - because it is impossible to walk during that song!

I then ran back at 6.0, would feel an urge to run faster and so would find myself doing 6.5 again for a bit. I meant to stop at 3.0 miles and cool down with 2 walked laps but I felt so good I figured I might as well keep going. And when I got to 3.5 I has slowed down to 5.5mph and it felt fine so I figured why not keep running til 4.0 - and so I did that. Then I jogged for most of a lap at 5.0 and walked the rest. Total Workout: 4.5 miles in 49:29  713cals 1%.

I wish I had a deep thought or reflection to go along with my run. I feel like I haven't had a good one in a while. But no, I got nothing.

All There Is

I ate a slice of pizza, ate a girl scout cookie, drank some water and realized that 2/3 of what I had just done was pretty bad and so I went on a walk. My StoryCorps book "All There Is" about Love stories arrived today so I grabbed it and started reading as I walked. I teared up, I laughed, I read 40 pages in 2.0 miles in 29:21 328cals 1%. I didn't want to stop reading. I decided that I definitely need to keep a good supply of books on hand for all of my walks - because it is so incredibly easy to walk and walk and walk and read.

Listening to Myself

Walked 2 laps at 4.1mph while playing Solitaire (because I forgot I needed to read the daily readings!). Then I did a brief pit stop in the restroom. Then I ran at 6.0 for 1.25 miles, with one lap at 6.5mph. Then I chugged a glass of water since I am trying to make sure I listen to what my body wants. Then I got back onto the treadmill and started running. I started off at 6.0 but a few paces later I remembered I once wrote a post where I had found a sweet spot at 6.1mph and so I bumped it up to that. During that mile I also did a lap at 6.5mph. I cooled down with a lap at 5.5 then one at 5.0. Then I walked 2 laps while reading the daily readings and reflection. I jogged/ran 2.5 of the total miles. Prayerful Walk

In the afternoon I walked 2.0 miles on the treadmill at 4.1mph 1% and read yesterday's Church readings since my Kindle app thought yesterday was the 17th. This allowed me to keep my Lenten "self betterment" decision to read each daily mass, read about the Saint of the day, and do the reflection. Total Workout: 2.0 in 29:18 328cals 1%.

Face the Cold

Large, puffy white flakes were falling and it was 30 degrees (with a Feels Like of 23) when I stepped out onto my porch. I instantly said, "No. No no. No." and turned around and went back inside.

About 10 minutes later I worked up the courage to go outside again and I just walked thru the cold, trying not to think about it, hoping I'd warm up, and then I started running. I trotted along at a comfortable pace and eventually felt warm enough. I had to tug my base layer down a few times as it would curl up, but other than that all my layers, ear band, and new Nike running gloves kept me warm. I did my 4.0 mile loop in 36:27 -- losing about 30 seconds to having to stand for cars as I tried to cross streets.

The whole run felt comfortable until mile 3.8 when my right side got a minor side stitch - I told it to go away as I was just about done. And it then at least didn't worsen as I finished up my run. I went inside, felt how sweaty I had become, stripped off the sticky and now cold layers and got a shower to warm up. I love the feeling of comfy sweats and a large sweatshirt - which is what I immediately found myself bundled up in for the rest of the afternoon. What a delightful day!

Great Way to Spend a Day

After an easy morning shopping and drinking a shamrock shake (the first one I've ever had (and it's decent)) I got changed and walked/jogged/ran. Walked 1 lap. Jogged 1 lap at 5.0. Jogged 1 lap at 5.5. Ran at 6.0 for a while then at 6.5 for 2 laps then back to 6.0 then back to 6.5. Then after having jogged or run for a solid 4.0 miles I dropped it down to 5.0 and jogged one more lap. Then I walked 2 laps at 4.1mph. Total Workout: 5.0 miles in 54:48 792cals 1%.

Just Can't Stomach It

I walked 1.5 miles at 1% while listening to the news and browsing Facebook. I then started jogging at 5.0mph to loosen up and then I ran at 6.0mph. For about a mile I had to stop every half mile or quarter mile to run to the restroom - it probably wasn't the best of ideas to eat ice cream before running.

But then my stomach settled down and I ran just fine. I ran until 4.5 miles for a 3.0 mile run. I then jogged for 2 laps at 5.5mph then 1 at 5.0mph. Then I walked a cool down lap. All while listening to the news. Total Workout: 5.5 miles in 64:19 877cals 1%.

Replacement Walk

Sunny warm day but windy and I wanted to take a lunch walk but had to go buy some lunch. So I was eager to get home and walk outside in the fading sun. But then I ate dinner and the sun went away and it became chilly. I called Ryan to see if he wanted to go to the track and walk with me and he said yes. But when he got home it was even much chillier and instead I opted for the treadmill. I started walking at 4.2mph but my left side cramped up after one lap. I paused for a few minutes. Then I slowed to 4.0mph and walked without any issues. Total Workout: 2.0 miles in 29:52 328cals 1%.

Easy Peasy

Not sure if it is possible to be dreading and looking forward to running at the same time. But I would say it is possible because that is how I felt today. I am supposed to run a lot of miles. How many miles do I feel like doing? Just 3, or 4. Which is a bit off from the 7 or so I should really be doing in prep for the 10 mile race that is just 2 weeks away! This is bad.

Last night Ryan did P90X Yoga for a while and I felt guilty just listening, though it helped slow my breathing. But about 20 minutes later I did get up and joined him and did yoga with him for about 20 minutes. It was a low intensity yoga - where it felt good to move around, and a bit challenging, but not too terrible (mainly because I ended up doing about 20% of what the P90X people were doing). So that was something, but probably doesn't equal doing 4 miles.

In the upper 40s with part sun, part clouds I went out at 1 and did my modified 3.0 course - basically turning it into a 4.0 mile course. I made sure to add some extra running in this time to make up for the .2 it fell shy last time from being a perfect 4.0 miles. And when I measured it after the run it equaled 4.0 miles on the nose. I meant to run slow-ish and I ended up running faster than expected. Total Workout: 4.0 miles in 34:28.

Evening Walk

Got home from work and ate, cleaned the toilets (because that's a fun thing to do on a Friday night!), and then walked 1.25 miles in 17:52 204cals 1%. I played Solitaire, winning a game in 1:33 (I think it's record time. I don't know why they make games that are that simple though) and I listened to NPR news -- a repeat of news I heard earlier in the day but this time since I focused more on it I heard more.

My knees cooperated with the walk so that was nice. I was happy to get the walk in because I really need to shower, and with it out of the way now I can.

Small Mistakes

44 degrees with a feels like of 39 - turns out walking is much different than running in this temperature. I thought pants, a hoodie, t-shirt, vest, and gloves would be perfect. I step outside and right back in to put on ear warmers. Then I went out. As I left the porch I thought, "Well this is a mistake." but I continued on anyways. About 4 minutes later I put up my hood. I walked in the brisk, chilled air and felt every bit of it. I contemplated running but I had my phone so it would have been awkward. So I just kept on walking, away from my house. I walked for 20 minutes and did 1.25 miles. Then I was happy to get back inside and let my face defrost.

Walking was a small mistake, in that I hadn't realized it would feel so cold (I hope I don't get sick because of it!) and towards the end my right knee started telling me it hurt (darn!). I need to get over these aches and pains so I can get back into proper running.

Sunshiny February Day

Ran outside in bright sunshine and 36 degrees for 3.8 miles in 34:33. It felt super slow, but also the max speed that I could get myself to go. I did my 3.0 mile route with some extra roads tossed in. When I measured it upon my return I found it just shy of 4.0 miles so I got onto the treadmill and walked 1 lap in 3:35. I walked 1.0 and listened to PRI's "The World" then I paused for about 10 minutes to recover from a right side-stitch. Then I jogged at 5.0 for .35 and that felt fine enough in my left knee (and left shin) so I bumped it up to 5.2 for a few steps and that felt fine and so from there I ran at 5.5mph. It's Hard Doing Nothing

After two back-to-back talks with my sister and my dad I got onto the treadmill and walked. Well actually for the last 15 minutes of the call with my dad I walked because it was at that point I realized that instead of sitting like a lump in a chair I could and should be moving! I felt sad to have wasted other time I could have been walking. But it was likely for the best - as my left knee has been upset and telling me all about it since Saturday.

I am a bit bummed by the fact my knee has taken to hurting. I was really hoping to get out of the 1500.0 journey without any major pains or issues. I have been so very blessed so far. I know I should take it easy and rest up so that the tendonitis settles down, but it is so hard to just do nothing.

After that I watched The Biggest Loser while sitting on the ottoman and casually lifting my 5lb weights. It was something, and my knee was half happy to not be called up to action.

(I also ate 5 chocolate chip cookies. Oops. But the guilt of that helped me not snack on anything else for the rest of the night. So eating cookies quite possibly saved me a few calories! Or at least that's what I'm telling myself to feel better about it.)

Workout Inside

Warm-up mile then 1.0 mile at 6.5mph. Then a short break for water. Then 2.0 miles at 7.0mph - though just before hitting 3.75 I started running for 1:00 minute on then 1:00 off - going to 7.5, down to 7.0, up to 8.0, back to 7.0, then to 8.5, then to 8.0, then 7.5, then 7.0 - that got me to 4.5 total miles. I then slowed to 6.5 for a lap, 6.0 for a lap, then for a cool down lap I trotted along at 5.5 then 5.0. I had intended to walk and stop at 5.0 but then since Ryan hadn't yet kick me off the tready as I had expected him too I figured I had the time to walk .25 for a cool down. I then ended and went to grab water and found Ryan all geared up for an outside run! It was 24 degrees outside with a wind chill below 0! But he was going out none-the-less. The good news was that I still had time to use the treadmill. So after seeing him off I got back onto the treadmill and walked 1.25 at 4.2mph 1% while playing Solitaire and listening to public radio. Total Workout: 6.5 in68:10 1025cals 1%.

The run felt strong. Ever since the 4.0 mile run the other day my body has felt strong again and not rejecting the idea of running. So happy to feel like "I'm back!"
