Solitaire-y Walk

After much accidental procrastination and inactivity I got onto the treadmill after Ryan finished up running. I decided I at least needed to walk and so I did. I grabbed the Kindle, listened to really bad pop music on Pandora, and played Solitaire as I walked. I got so absorbed in the game that the first time I looked up I had already walked 1.0 miles. I then started a new game of Solitaire and played a hand that quickly became my enemy - I re-played the hand - the same deal - over and over again determined to find the way that would let me win it. By the time I won I had walked 3.6 miles. I felt accomplished for not being defeated and for having gotten a work out in. I re-realized that if I did a similar thing while watching TV it would be so very easy to walk many many miles.

I rounded out the walk to 3.75 then started running. I started running at 6.0mph then upped it to 6.5mph. Then once adjusted to running I pumped it up to 8.0mph (7:30 pace) and ran for 1.0 miles. Then I cooled down for a lap. Total Workout: 5.0 miles in 64:08 806cals 1%.

Frankenstorm

Last night saw lots of rain and stories from New York City about the flooding; today brought more stories and pictures. It is crazy stuff. After keeping up with that news all day I got home from work and since it was still raining and cold out I went to go directly on the treadmill, but I found myself with a migraine. At first I didn't know it was a migraine - I thought I had a momentary vision problem and then it last so long I thought I was going blind or suffering from some major health issue. But after 20 minutes my vision stopped being non-vision and the blurriness/non-seeing-ness went away and in its place a massive migraine started to take hold on my right side with some bonus left shoulder area numbness.

I started walking with the vision issue and walking cleared it up. But I started running and my head was foggy regardless of my better vision. But I was determined to not quit like I've done these last few days and so I started jogging then running. I ran at a slow pace for a while then bumped it up to 6.5 mph. Then for 1 mile I ran at 7.0mph (8:00 pace) at 1% incline. My head was very unclear but I ran along listening to pop music on Pandora - and while the music hurt to listen to it it helped me continue running so I blasted it. I was not helping myself fend off the migraine, and I knew that was stupid of me. And then the rest of my night was spent napping then reading in silence to try to rid myself of the Frankenstorm inside my head.

Failure to Run

Opposite of a "No Excuses" attitude I think my lack of activity warrants some excuses... (1) With a migraine for the past 5 days that kept coming and going I never mustered up the ability to run; a few times I got close but any movement would send my head pounding so I opted to just not run. (2) My left ankle is suffering my the mysterious injury that cropped up last Sunday - where sometimes I am fine and other times it is so painful to walk that I limp - it is like a nerve or a ligament moves to the wrong place around my ankle and it hurts to put pressure on it. It is odd and finally in the past 2 days this has started happening less and less so I think I am finally at the point I am able to run or at least walk again.

It has finally reached that time of year where I will be relegated to the Tready for many of my runs. And Lunch Walks will be nigh impossible or at least improbable. While I adjust to the cooler temperatures and rain (and soon snow) I am also just depressed to not be outside and that it is so dark so quickly. I gave myself this past week to mope and deny and recover and now I need to get my butt in motion and stop this inactivity. A good motivator is that I feel so fit and I want to maintain this level of fitness. I am happy with my weight and I want to maintain this level of "super goal weight" nearness (which is 125.0) - I definitely want to stay under 130.0 which is just plain ol' "goal weight". I feel so much like me right now that it would be silly to just give that up and revert back to my old ways.

Eating cookies a lot is not helping me. So I need to get back into motion and out of this cookie funk. I hope to get moving tonight on the Tready. Hopefully tonight my head and feet cooperate.

Night Update: With Sandystorm battering down with plenty of rain I got onto Tready with my Kindle in hand and played Fluffy Birds and listening to NPR while walking. It went mostly fine, a few pains in my left ankle, but otherwise not bad. I was hoping I would work my way up to running as I got my body moving. But about 1.0 miles in the lights went dark, the tready came to a halt, and the radio went silent. Sandystorm knocked out our electricity. I lighted my way to a flashlight with the light of my Kindle - suprisingly a powerful light in pitch blackness. A few minutes later the power came back on, but I did not get back on the tready - the power outtage zapped my willpower to move. And so I showered and sat around doing nothing but eating a salad and drawing up logo ideas. Which was probably the best choice as my head was hurting worse and worse - I think due to the severe low barometric pressure.

Simply 70s

Such a beautiful, warm night it was impossible to not go outside. I ate a gourmet grilled cheese and a pickle and then I went to the track to walk and run. I walked a warm up lap, did a few stretches, and then ran a mile at 9:00 pace though somehow in the second half of the mile I sped up and finished it in 8:42. Then I jogged a lap and then still wanting to walk a cool down but not wanting to finish with odd mileage I decided to run one more lap and then I walked my cool down. After those 2.0 miles I felt good; the remaining soreness felt like it worked its way out of my legs and I was able to work around the pain in my left ankle which had taken to hurting on Sunday for some unknown reason.

As I walked the final lap I decided it was too nice to stop now, and since I was feeling looser I decided to keep running. I finished out the lap, stretched a little more, swigged my Gatorade, and then I went off and did 1.0 miles of 100m jog/100m hard run/sprint. The first two laps felt fine, the 3rd one was tougher but still fine and then at that point I was fine enough to do the 4th lap since I reminded myself: "Just 2 more hard sprints". I timed the one earlier sprint and I did the 100m in 16 seconds; so that felt good. After that mile I jogged a complete lap to try to recover in my breathing and then I walked a lap. Total Workout: 3.5 miles between 6:26-7:12pm.

Buffalo Creek Half Marathon: 1:44:30!

Ryan and I got up early and and drove to the Buffalo Creek Half Marathon. We got our bibs, got ready, used the port-a-johns, bussed over to the starting line, went inside the warm building for a few minutes then realized we might as well be productive with our time and stood in the port-a-john line - for about 45 minutes. Ryan gave up and then warmed-up and I waited it out. I got to go just barely before the start - but it was good that I did. I jogged over to the beginning and then listened to the National Anthem and then jumped a few times to see over people and I found Ryan about 10 feet away and so I went over to him so we could start out together. And that's pretty much all we did - I kept a decent pace but it felt good so I didn't want to slow down. And so Ryan trailed closely behind me for a while but we didn't run together.

The trail was very scenic, in those moments I remembered to look around. I did that every time I heard water trickling through rocks or I ran over a bridge. I carried two GU gels in my hands, drank water and Gatorade at every water station, and I ran along. In mile 1 I was doing 8:20 pace - and for the next few miles I got a little faster. At mile 6 I had evened it out to averaging a perfect 8:00 mile. And a fw minutes after thinking about where Ryan was and that I had to see him soon I heard him clear his throat about 40 yards behind me. I turned and waved and smiled and shouted, "I was windering when I'd see you!". A short time later he caught me then passed me. I attempted to keep up for a few yeards, immediately felt my heart and lungs react negatively to the change, and so told him I wouldn't try to keep up and I slowed back down. I kept him in my sights for the next 4 miles, but then he got one bend too far ahead of me so I feel like I had just missed seeing him every time I rounded a corner.

I kept on pace. I prayed. I gave myself motivational monologues: "You can do this. No matter if you start to feel bad you've got to keep going. This is race day! This is everything you trained for. This is it!" And as I neared mile 9 still on 8:00 mile pace I finially took a few moments to do some math. And I discovered that I could finish in 1:44:X if I didn't slow down. This motivated me even more. Before the Half my goal was to finish in under 1:50 - something no greater than 1:49:X. And now mid-race I knew that I had a chance to supercede that goal and do better than I had thought. Something in 1:44:X was a dream and a hope before the race. I had previously plugged in numbers to the race calculator to see just what I would have to do to get it - so it was there in the back of my mind. And until the moments of actually running the course that goal was but a hoped for dream, but as I was going strong and feeling good it became my day's goal. I motivated myself, "This is the day. This is everything you have trained for. It is race day! Keep going strong." And I ran along, keeping stride, keeping pace, and slowly but surely passing a few people along the way.

At mile 5 I felt like I had barely done anything yet and so I told myself, "Ok you got your warm-up lap in now it is time to go run 5 miles." And it felt good. I got to mile 10 and said, "Ok, you did a warm-up lap. Now it is time to go on a hard 3 mile run." And at mile 11 I said, "Ok, you got a warm-up in. Now it's time to go on a hard 2 mile run. You've done this before. But now it's race day! Go do this!" And I pushed out my run, feeling good.

As you leave the trail and venture into town you need to go up a hill. For the final flat straighaway I picked up my pace some - trying to gain a few seconds which I figured I would need later. As I went to leave the trail on the bridge overhead I heard: "Go Mo!" and I looked up and Ryan was right there! I shouted for him to keep up his good pace. Then I droppe dmy head down, dug my feet in, and ran hard up the hill. The "hill" is a hill when you've run 12 miles down a slight grade. But where I come from the "hill" was nothing. I got up the hill, and got a chance to even out my breathing as the bridge I had turned onto slanted downwards. I recovered just in time to tackle the next "hill" and upwards I went at a fast pace. I turned off the main road and the rest of the course eased downwards - I ran hard telling myself "Just 5 more minutes at most. You got this!" -- which is how I often get thru tough training runs. A few girls were in front of me, and I made it my goal to pass them. And one by one I did. I then rounded the final bend and for a flat straightaway I sprinted. People lined the area and cheered. I spied the clock and saw 1:44:15. I decided I needed to finish by 1:44:30 and I spinted. I heard Ryan cheer me on my left and I saw him. I passed one more girl and crossed the finish line at exactly 1:44:30!

I was happy; and perhaps my picture will not show it and instead will show determination, but I am fine with that. I just finished a Half Marathon in an amazing time! I grabbed my medal, was handed a water, and walked over to Ryan - he had finished in 1:43:35! Both of us had gotten personal records! We hung around in the finish area for a bit and ate food - quickly got tight and cold and got out clothes at gear check and bundled up. We drank some hot apple cider. And then walked (the long way) to the bus. We got on the bus and bussed back to the parking lot. We got our picture taken by his co-worker and friend who had also run the Half. Then we got in our car and drove home, feeling a sense of accomplishment.

Final Pre-Race Miles

Ate a salmon feta burger, salad, slice of rye bread, drank water, waited around for about an hour and then ran on the tready. I warmed up for a lap, stretched, listened to PRI's "The World" and then ran at 6.0mph for 2 miles and then I cooled down with a jog/walk. Total Workout: 2.5 miles in 26:41.

Lunch Walk

An unseasonably warm mid-day (coming out of a very chilly morning) made it was a great day for a walk. I went out into the 65 degree sunny day and got my walk in. As I walked I kicked a number of the fallen leaves and I walked a rainbow - there was a hedge that was half green and half red and on the way to the red end the hedge gradually transitioned. It was a neat experience to walk along and watch the leaf colors change right in front of my eyes. Total Workout: 1.0 miles.

Chilly Evening Run

I went to the track and ran a warm-up lap then stretched. Then I ran 1.0 miles in 8:15. It was chilly so I wore my bright green coat and capri-pants. I could see my breath, which was saddening. I realized late in the mile that my feet were numb. After the mile I loosened my shoelaces and that helped some in my second mile as did having more blood pump to them. I completed the 2.0 miles in 16:32. Then I ran/jogged/walked a cool down lap.

The pace felt doable and somewhere between mile 1 and 2 I finally warmed up. I hope it isn't much cooler come race day but I know it will be. I know I'll warm up as I go but I know it's going to be rough waiting around for 30 minutes in the cold prior to running. I am trying to mentally prepare for it now.

Make up run

To make up for yesterday's disappointment I also ran today. I was originally thinking that I would run at least 5.0 but then I realized I should not exhaust myself just one week out from the big day. And so I did a 3 miler in my Adizeros and it was very tiring. The wind was against me the whole way and I could feel the lack of nutrition in my muscles and them just trying to do what they could. I pushed it out towards the end - trying to get less than 24:01 but when I stopped my watch it said 24:01:05. So close and disappointing to just miss it. Then I stretched as I watched TV.

1100 Miles! & Annoyances

I slept in a bit longer than I would have liked and that ended up making me highly annoyed as I had to weave through people and cars rather than having a relaxing morning run. I started running at 9:15 and that turned out to be too late of a start to avoid the madness of a 10:30am homecoming parade. I got off the main road and ran up backroads, which was problematic since that was where everyone was parking. But after mile 1 it cleared up and I did the next mile out in peace and the returning mile.

There is a cemetery on the route and I decided to finally check it out. But as I ran down hill I realized that the longer I took to get back the worse it would be and then once the parade started I would really have issues. And so I immediately got back on the road and ran through a mile of people standing and walking on the shoulder with some cars still coming by - but fortunately slowly.

If I wasn't so annoyed I would have appreciated the sight of a horse drawn carriage clopping past me. But as it was I was very annoyed, especially when some high school cheerleaders were walking and so I moved over some but they didn't move over at all. And so instead of moving out of the way completely I stayed where I was and so when we passed we hit shoulders. Again, highly annoying. But I trudged along slowly just trying to get through, and eventually I did. I did 4.5 miles in 38:39.

It was also rather cold when I started, but at least sunny. I wore gloves, pants, a t-shirt, a long sleeved shirt, and my bright green running jacket. I think the extra weight also made the run hard.

I ended my run highly unsatisfied and having gone a distance shorter than I had wanted. I reached the 1100 milestone without even realizing that I had reached it and definitely not appreciating it as I should.

The first 4 miles felt good, the fifth mile was getting a bit rougher but the pace was maintainable thru the mile. Then I ran home at what felt like a faster pace than my watch said, but it was supposed to be a cool down. Then I walked my driveway a few times to cool down for real.

10 Miler

Out to the lake for a 5 mile loop times two at 8:30am. Chilly 47 degrees. Wore my new hot pink Fila skimmers with my lime green shorts on top and my blue Fila light Running Jacket. The first 5 miles felt effortless except for the one big hill. The second 5 miles felt good but it was not too strenuous. I feel very ready for the Half in just two weeks (!).

Nearing the end of the first loop I ate (drank?) a GU gel. Then at my car I drank some Gatorade. And within 2 minutes I was out running again. I did the first 5.0 in 41:58 and finished all 10.0 in 1:23:53 (8:23 average pace). I know come race day I'll have 3 more miles to do but today it definitely seemed like an additional 3 would not be a problem. And while my average pace was decent I want to go faster come race day. I feel confident that under race conditions I will be able to go faster.

Lunch Walk

Dreary looking day due to rain clouds, but luckily the rain stopped during lunch and I went outside for a walk. It was 67 degrees and nice and warm feeling and humid. My lungs liked the humidity and the warmth. The walk was fine, I think my lungs handled it well. But then I went back into work and the air was a bit cooler and so I am hoping that the change in temperature doesn't make me re-sick.
