Cross-Training

Spent the day painting - so my right arm got a decent workout. Then I went to go run at the track but I forgot that its now Fall which means Friday nights are football nights. So I made it out the door and into traffic and ten minutes later I was able to loop the block and come back home. Then I got onto the treadmill and jogged some and ran and did 1.0 miles in 9:25 at 1%. Then I went out the door and mowed the grass. Afterwards I carried a lot of mulch and mulched the plants.

Today was a cross-training day and so I think I sufficiently met that workout.

On Wednesday, August 29th Bridgette and I celebrated the end of our 10th season playing Gaelic Football at our last practice.

B - Double E - Double - R - U - N

After a delightful happy hour filled with 4 tacos, 4 mini-cupcakes, and 2 Sam Adams Oktoberfests I got home and decided I wanted to go on a run. I went to the track and ran a warm up lap in 1:55. Then I ran a solid mile in 9:36 total time (7:41 pace). I took a quick water break and ran another solid mile in 17:16 total time (7:40 pace).

Then I did a set of plyos - 10 squats, 10 lunges, 10 squat jumps, 10 push-ups, 10 sit-us, 10 push-ups, 10 sit ups then I sipped some water. Then I ran 2 laps. Did the plyos again but started with the squat jumps first since the first time around I was very wobbly by the time I got to them. And then I ran another half mile - finishing the 3rd mile in 24:47. I then jogged half a lap til 26:00 then I walked the final half lap. Total Workout: 3.5 miles in 28:06.

Stretched at the track then got home and stretched some more.

Hard 2 Run

After being rejected from the Color Me Rad 5K - due to having to sit in CMR traffic for 2+ hours - I enjoyed an evening of family and food. Then I spent most of Sunday relaxing on the couch and rehydrating and trying not to eat delicious food until after I ran.

At 5pm Ryan and I went off on a 6 miler - running the same route as the previous one we did. We ran the first two miles in 7:38 pace! It was difficult and exhausting. Between the fast pace and bobbing water bottles on my waist I was rather tired and so after 3.5 miles I peeled off and ran at the track for 2 miles and then ran home. The track laps were supposed to be fast or at a decent pace and yet though I tried I just could not run them fast. It took me 2:08 or 2:09 each lap. I rewarded my constant running with a water break after the 2 miles before doing the final .5 home.

Ryan beat me home by about 2 minutes then we took a .25 mile cool down walk.

Total Workout: 6.0 in 49:23 + .25 cool down.

Take It Uneasy

I ran a couple of errands and then I ran. I went on my 3 mile loop but my stomach didn't feel that well and so I opted to take the easy way home and just get the run over with so I could not feel uncomfortable.

3 Hard Miles

My muscles felt like I had already run when I went out on my 3 mile loop. I did some warm up and stretching and that helped some but after half a mile my right groin hurt a bit so I stopped and stretched it out. Then I kept running and it felt fine but I was generally tired and it was definitely a work out. I tried to keep a good pace despite my tiredness and hard breathing. I managed to do well. But it was 3 miles that felt more difficult than I would have liked.

Hard and Fast

Lunch walk 1.0 miles.

I had to work but thank goodness for laptops! I propped it up beside the treadmill and I ran and monitored my work. I warmed up then I did 30 seconds on 30 seconds off at 6.5mph, 7.0, 7.5, 8.0, 8.5, 9.0, 9.5, 10. Then I had a bit of a rest. Then I did a solid 1 minute on then 1 minute off running at 9.0, 9.5, 10.0 and 10.mph (5:42 pace!). I then jogged at 5.0mph for a recovery of 2 minutes then I walked out the remaining bit to get me to 2.25 miles. I was still breathing a bit hard even after finishing the walk.

I then followed it up with 20 minutes of the Bob Harper Beginner's Weight Loss DVD. For a nice cross-training workout.

I was very sweaty and very happy that I could then relax finishing up work knowing that I worked hard.

Summer Rain

Thought about running outside but between my upset stomach and the storm clouds that moved in I opted to run on the treadmill. It was a tough run for some reason though I took it easy with walking then jogging before getting up to 6.5mph pace. I looked forward to the end of my run the whole time. I would have done 3 if I had gone outside. It took so much energy to force myself to go just 2. But it was good that I stayed in doors since after mile 1 the thunder clasped and then by mile 2 the rain came.

I spent the rest of the night cleaning the house; so that burned a few extra calories.

6 Miler

A nice wedding weekend filled with over indulgence in delicious beverages and food led me 3 pounds heavier and feeling like blah. And also very very tired from lack of sleep. Ryan mentioned he was going to go on a run and that motivated me to change from my comfy clothes and put on some running gear.

And changing and putting on my shoes did the trick! It woke me up enough to actually feel like I could harness the energy to run and it helped nudge me into having more resolve to banish my blah feelings. Ryan stretched and talked about how he was going to do a 6 mile run because his Half Marathon CrossFit Workout training plan called for it. He told me where he'd be running and I decided I definitely could join him for at least the first 3 miles since it was an out-and-back (3.5 miles) then opposite direction out-and-back (2.5 miles) course which swung back near our house at that 'half way' point. He almost lost me though when he said his planned pace - somewhere between 8:00 and 8:30 miles. I didn't think I could do it. But I thought that for 3 miles I probably could. So eventually we were ready and we headed out the door.

It was fast but it was good. It didn't take too long to get warmed-up enough and it didn't take long for my lower calves to complain. My calves were more annoying then anything - not a true cramp since I could keep running, but tight and uncomfortable. We covered the first 3 miles in a roughly 8:00 pace. one of our miles was in 7:40! (The downhill mile, go figure.)

Around mile 2 I decided that I should run all 6 miles. At the 3.5 mile split I still felt good and so I definitely decided to keep going. It was fun running with Ryan on the warm but comfortable summer evening. The best innovation of our run was our decision on having the lead runner say "Hold" indicating we needed to stop for a car and "Run" when the coast was clear. This was better than "No" and "Go" since those two sounded too similar, and since the first time I misheard a "No" for a "Go" and almost stepped out in the road when a car was coming. The shoulder was narrow for most of teh run so we did run single-file for much of it. I let Ryan take the lead.

One of the final miles was all uphill, a gradual painful one. It took almost all of my remaining reserves to get up that hill. Then it leveled out and I recovered within a few minutes and was able to finish out the final half mile just fine.

We finished our 6 Miler in 49:06! Averaging a pace of 8:11! I felt really good about that time and it was encouraging to me as a sign of my fitness level. I hope not only will I be all set for the Half Marathon I just signed up for which occurs October 20, but I perhaps could have the chance to set a new Personal Record!

Lunch Walk, Dinner Run

Lunch walk on an overcast then semi-sunny, muggy day. It was also breezy. It felt and looked very much like a Fall day but there was a warmth in the air that I was grateful for. I am glad it is still summer and the chilly and I want those cold months can stay as far away as possible!

My muscles were still tired and sore from Tuesday's run and Wednesday's practice so it was good to get a walk in to loosen up.

Plus a 1.0 mile run on the treadmill 9:53 1% 157cals.

Watermelon Envy

Post-work got a 4 miler in. I went on my 3 mile loop and was doing a good pace. At mile 2 my lower left side had an odd stabby pain. I poked at it til it went away. It was bad enough to almost stop, but I kept going since I was at a good pace and didn't want to mess that up.

At mile 2.5 (21:00) I decided to definitely add another mile to the run and so I veered to the track. I did 1.0 mile at the track at 8:00 pace. Then I ran home, crossing the driveway finish line in 35:19. Total Workout: 4.0 miles in 35:19.

I wore my bright green shorts, bright pink sleeveless top, pink/black/green running shoes and my safety vest. I had my pink headphones in my ears connected to my iPod shuffle in its green sleeve. I was a pretty successful watermelon and I felt like everyone who saw me wanted to be like me.

Evening Walk

After a relaxing day of breakfast with my family, Olympics watching, writing, reading, and hanging up pictures I asked Ryan if he would like to go on a walk with me. Surprising he said yes! So we walked the neighborhood out for .5 and back.

Along our stroll we saw many neighbors who have left their Recycling cans out in protest since the recycling truck hasn't come by in two weeks. We got home and re-put out our can to join in the protest. Ryan was giddy to join in this suburban silent but visible protest. Only in America.
