Reflecting Pool of Sweat

1.0 mile Lunch Walk in the 82 degree funshine. It was delightful. For most of the walk I had Two Man Gentleman Band's version of 'The Big Strong Man' in my head, so I didn't get much actual thinking done. But it was delightful nonetheless.

Pre-practice I ran. I went to work early so I could leave "early" to beat traffic since sitting for an hour isn't my idea of fun. And it worked out well! I got to the field with plenty of time to get a nice run it. I warmed up for a lap at 2:00 pace. Then I ran 1.0 solis in 7:20. Then I followed it up by doing a mile with 3 laps where I sprinted/ran hard for the straight-aways. I then cooled down by jogging and walking for a lap. Doing 1.25 in 11:25. Total Workout: 2.5

Some 'Get in shape' class was at the track from 6:00-6:30. From the snippets of conversation I gleamed during my laps these are people who are either just trying to get back in shape or trying to work towards doing their first half marathon. The lady in charge completed her first 'camp' the session before and was able to do a half marathon. Tonight's session was a 3 mile walk plus several whistled times of running. It was a motivator to run faster when I weaved through the people hogging up my lane - which I was attempting to make Lane 2 since they were everywhere on the track. As I ran I reflected on how just 2 years ago this pretty much was me, though more credit to these people who went out into a social situation and decided to work hard. I prefer solitude and working solo and yes writing about my journey but pretending that simultaneously no one and everyone is reading my posts.

I followed up the run by doing practice - where by the end my legs were pretty dead. I officially need a day off from running. I think I made up a lot of ground I lost from not doing something for a few days. But now I am just 1 mile away from a fun milestone so we shall see!!

Outdoors and In

Family reunion today! Spent all afternoon outside hanging out with the family - talking, eating, throwing baseball, throwing football, kicking the soccer ball, and facing off against my Dad in corn hole and ladder ball. A mostly active afternoon in the sun.

Back at home I still had energy so I set out on a walk. For the first half mile I pumped my arms purposely to possibly get some muscles moving. For the second half I picked up the 5lb weights and pumped them a lot - it was very tiring but good. Then I followed it up with 100+ sit-ups.

Rain Rain

Days and days of rain left me indoors during lunch. On Wednesday I had football and I planned to run post-practice, but my ankle was very uncooperative. So there went that plan.

Then Thursday I did some house cleaning. Friday I napped away a migraine then watched the opening ceremony of the 2012 Summer Olympics. And so finally after a several day hiatus I got moving again.

For a change I put in my Bob Harper DVD and did my Beginner's Workout for 40 minutes. Followed up by a mile run at 6.5 briefly then to 7.0 til .5 then 7.5 for a lap then 8.0 for most of Lap 4 and I bumped it up to 9.0mph (6:40 pace) for 30 seconds. Then I cooled down for half a mile at 6.5 bumped it down to 5.5 for a bit then walked out the final bit at 4.3. Total Workout: 2.0 miles in 19:04 313cals 1%.

Flower Power Up

Muggy day; felt like any given day in South Carolina except gladly there were some rainy clouds overhead. I sweat way too much with an end result of being inappropriately sweaty at my desk. But I got a mile in and that's really all that matters.

In the evening the storms were gone and I finally got myself to head over to the nearby school to take some pictures of their beautiful flowers. I did that for 20 minutes and then I went to the track. I warmed up for a lap and then I stepped back into Lane 4 - oddly the one rather free of walkers and runners - and went running. For 4 laps I walked/jogged the bends and sprinted the 100m straightaways. It was very difficult in that 4th lap, but it was exactly what I've needed. For football my sprint-recovery isn't all that great. It is what I told myself I would work on months ago and yet I didn't do anything about it. So at least I did it once. Then I cooled down by jogging a lap. I did 1.25 in 12:25. Total Workout: 1.5 miles.

Post Dramatic Stress Disorder

Sunday, July 22 saw a re-match against Detroit. We led for most of the game with me scoring and running and scoring and running as much as possible. But somehow at the very end they made up the difference and we ended in a tie. It was very disheartening and depressing. I didn't sleep all that much last night as I kept dwelling on the game, wishing a few more of my shots went in, and that things had ended differently. But I am trying to get over it and accept it, because no matter what I cannot change what happened. I think I suffer from PDSD - Post Dramatic Stress Disorder. My brain is really bad at letting go of things.

Today I felt a wee bit sore from the game. But I needed to energize myself and move and so I went on a 1.0 mile lunch walk. It was nice to get some sun and sweat thru my shirt. It helped keep me awake at work. Concentrating on work was a separate matter; still didn't figure out how to do that.

In the evening I mowed the yard which warmed me up and got me energized and so I got onto the treadmill and ran for 10:00 straight and then jogged and walked a cool down. I ran at 6.0 then 6.5 then most at 7.0mph. I did 1.25 in 11:50 195cals 1%. Then our friend Aaron came over and we sat around and talked til 10:30 - so I enjoyed a very full day.

A Long Time Coming

I have felt so out of it and slightly depressed by my lack of activity. I have said it before and it still rings true - it is so easy to do nothing, so hard to do something. But I got myself out of my funk this evening and did my 3 mile loop. A sign of how infrequently I have run recently is that I forgot to put on my safety vest! And yes it was only 6:30 but it was dreary and rainy and felt odd to not have it on.

But I did feel myself running quickly and well. I went along decently enough for a while and then my usual tiredness and harder breathing kicked in and then I recovered and continued to push out my run. I was doing good pace-wise and in the final mile I decided I wanted to be done by 26:00. Closer to the end I decided I would be happier if I finished by 25:30 and so I kept pushing hard. I crossed into the driveway at 25:29!

During the run I listened to NPR's Marketplace and The World. I was hesitant to listen to the news and use that as my motivation but it worked just fine. And perhaps it worked better than music! It got me thinking and moving and I did well. Total Workout: 3.0 in 25:29

Simple Jog

After a long day of painting and moving furniture I went out to the track and go a little run in. I did a warm up jogging lap and stretched then I did 1.0 miles solid in 7:31. Then I meant to jog for half a lap and then walk as my cool down but around the final lap turn I realized I was still jog/running and so I decided to keep running the lap, and then I decided that I would jog another and then walk, and then on that final lap I jogged half and only walked the final 200m. It was a nice 2.0 mile run and good to get my body moving but not enough to tire myself out - since on Sunday I was headed to Detroit for a division Gaelic Football game and needed my energy.

Soreness Galoreness

Awhile ago I discovered it takes me about 1 mile to actually feel warmed up. Every foot of tonight's mile was spent in the warm-up phase where I feel tight, sore, and like I'll never get loosened up again. The highlight was that I saw the dad of a kid I used to coach in soccer. I remembered his kid's name but had no idea what his was, but we said hi and had some other small talk. I always am excited when I see someone I know when I'm out in the world - it makes me feel connected to it. So that at least got my run started off on the right foot, but as for my left...

I did Lap 1 in 1:59, stretched, completed Lap 2 at 3:45, stretched, ran solid for Laps 3 and 4 - completing the mile in 7:32. Then I stretched. Then I did the 2 field lap warm up with the team and stretched more. At that point I felt looser but still not super great. Thru the first few drills I continued to stretch and that helped; I think. But mainly I remember just feeling sore and tight and tired and stiff and old.

At one point we stopped for a water break and a few minutes to sort out teams. In those minutes I got even tighter. Mainly my left lower back is not cooperating. My main plan for recovery on whatever that injury is is to wait it out and hope it goes away. So far no good, but I'm still giving it time.

On My Feet I Hobble

Pre-practice I did 2 track laps in 3:43, with the stretching break in between. Then I booted up and ran a lap around the field, keeping near to the track. During practice we did a full-field scrimmage. At first I was in a position with very limited running and then I got moved to one where I could run and run and that was fun. I still definitely need to work on my sprint and recovery time, but it felt much better than previous other times I ran around the field.

After practice I went to do more track running. Within the first 50m I could feel my right groin tweak. Because I don't like to give up, especially if people can see me, I just kept going. At the end of 100m I stretched it a little. It still hurt thru the rest of the first lap. But come sometime in lap 2 it felt somewhat better. Lap 3 was fine. Lap 4 I pushed the pace a bit to try to get under 8:00 -- because I had been averaging just over 2 minutes per lap up to that point. I finished the mile in 7:50. Then I went home.

At home I got out of my car and I could barely walk. Between my left lower back pain (which I may or may not have previously mentioned (which definitely made itself known during a beach run or two)) and my right groin (and I guess I should also mention my left knee has taken to having knee pain) I was a hobbling mess. I decided the rest of the night was going to be about me trying to fix what I just did to myself. I took a shower, stretched a little, then took a bath for a while, then stretched more. Then I sat still.

Hilton Head Island

On Friday, June 29 my three sisters and one sister's boyfriend headed to Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. We got in late and so I didn't do much but sit all day. Total Workout: 0.0 miles

Saturday, June 30 - The true first day of vacation. I walked the half mile to the beach and at the end of the day I walked back. 1.0 miles. Total Workout: 1.0 miles.

Sunday, July 1 - Bridgette and I got up early and went on a run along the bike route/trail underneath palm trees. The more the morning advanced the more people appeared and the harder it was to run along the trail since it was filled with many other runners, walkers, and, worst of all, bike riders. It wouldn't be so bad if people were more considerate, but sadly many people thought that they were the most important person on the trail and so opted to just force you out of the way. We did at least 3.25 miles in 31:34. Distance was measured by the road length which corresponds rather poorly to the trail length since the trail winds left and right and up and down a bit. I walked to the beach and back adding on one more mile. Then later in the day we got bikes and subsequent trips to the beach were biked, and therefore, not counted in my Journey's total. Total Workout: 4.25 miles.

Monday, July 2 - I got up early and ran to the beach, covering the half mile in 4:30. Then I ran the beach out and back in 40:07. At the end of the "out" part I paused for a minute and rested. Then I turned and ran back. As the crow flies I ran 4.0 miles. As the tide ebbs I know I did more. But since I cannot know exactly how much more I am not counting the distance. It is times like these that I wish I had a GPS watch or other device that would track my actual distance covered. Total Workout: 5.0 miles.

Tuesday, July 3 - I slept in longer than I had wanted to but despite the heat went beach running anyways. I did the usual run to the beach (and later the jog/walk back). I did 2.0 miles in 19:13. Then I did an extra .25 mile walk and enjoyed some barefoot time in the sand and ocean. Total Workout: 3.25 miles.

Wednesday, July 4 - Ran to the beach and turned right and ran southwest, my usual way. I ran out for 1.5 miles and back for 1.5 miles. Like the other days I competed against myself - I tried to make it back faster than I made it out. So each time I did shave off a little time, but also since I was running the beach and not just following a pre-defined trail perhaps I just didn't dip and turn and do as much extra running on the way back as I did on the way out. Again, I have no idea of knowing. But the thought that I ran faster makes me feel better. And that counts for something. Then at night we rode our bikes over to Harbourtown to see the fireworks. It was a 30ish minute trip out and a 40ish minute trip back; we covered a decent amount of distance. On the way out we saw an alligator. On the way back we barely saw anything at all. Total Workout: 4.0 + 1 Hour Bike Adventure Time!

Thursday, July 5 - Walked to the beach with some jogging in there with my camera to catch the sunrise. I enjoyed the quiet, calm, rising sun, and then shore objects for 2 hours. Several hundred pictures later I walked back. Total Workout: 1.0 miles.

Friday, July 6 - Up and off to the beach for my final beach run. I ran just over 1.5 on the way out in 15:15 and made the trip back speedily - finishing the 3.0 miles in 29:35. I did some extra beach walking and relaxing. Total Workout: 4.25+ miles.

Saturday, July 7 - I went to the beach again to witness the sunrise. Emily and Alanna came too and we did our best to run to the beach to make sure we made it in time. We did. It was beautiful. Then we sat in the car for many hours on our way home. Total Workout: 1.0 miles.

Sunday, July 8 - I was home and I did nothing. It was my way of denying "real life" again and refusing to let go of the specialness that is vacation.

New Miles: 1.0 + 4.25 + 5.0 + 3.25 + 4.0 + 1.0 + 4.25 + 1.0 = 23.75

Miles Remaining: 570.75
