A Socky Walk

I had a "free" day without Nora and a "free" night without Ryan but also without a car, and it was a glorious sunshiny 70 degree night so I went out walking just to be out in the amazing air and get some exercise. I semi-did my running loop but added some new pieces just to explore.

The walk was refreshing. And at one point for a few yards the air smelled like it did during college soccer runs to the field - so that took me back to the mile run to practice and just the enjoyment of that run with my teammates. Otherwise it was uneventful other than it felt like a mini-vacation -- just calmness, relaxingness, and being.

I didn't wear the right socks though - the ones I wore were too slippy in my shoes. It is unpleasant to feel your feet move within your shoes every single step. For runs I pick my running socks that are cotton and thicker but for this walk I thought it wouldn't matter. But it did. I'm hoping there was a plus side to the discomfort and that it burned extra calories but also strengthened my ankles and random other ligaments as my body adjusted and shifted every step. I'm sure I will be sore tomorrow, because I was already getting sore towards the end of the walk.

It took 1 hour and 6 minutes to go 3.5 miles.

I love being outside. And I especially love being outside on very nice nights.

Early Morning Run

I went to bed thinking I'd like to run in the morning. Having that in my mind helped me to just get up and do it - for fun no less! I woke up at 6 and was running by 630. I did my 3 mile loop. After 1/2 mile I stretched for 4 minutes. After 1 mile I stretched again. I needed those breaks. But I was out doing and that was what I needed to be doing and so I was fine with taking some re-coup time.

Not many people were out. It was a nice morning already - and warm enough to wear a tank top and shorts. I listened to On The Media and just enjoyed the morning.

Since I paused my stopwatch each time I took a break I had a sense of how long I actually ran for of my 35ish minutes of being out on a run. It was 27:59. I'll take it!

Oh! I'll also note that starting June 1 until June 24 I decided to cut out sweets - so anything that is purely just sugary deliciousness is a no-go. So far so good. Having that challenge and an end point to it is really helping me stick with it. And I haven't gotten angry yet from sugar withdrawal so that is great news!

A Blimp on the Map

A nice sunny hot day again and Nora and I went over to the my parents and then up to St. Bernard's chapel for a really intimate memorial service for my friend Nate. I walked in and was asked to sing and so that was really special - and it was not nerve wracking since I stood in the back singing with Erica and Fr. Dave. Afterwards we went to Bado's where Nora hung in there despite being tired - and that worked out well after we got home and she went to bed and it wasn't yet dark out and so I could go out front and get some hill work in.

That's right. It hurt like hill.

Actually, I said that just for the pun. I took the first few ups slow and then worked to sprints. For 10x. Up .05 from telephone pole to telephone pole - walk 20 feet then jogged back down - walked 20 feet turned around and walked back to the pole and repeat the sprint. So each set was .1 miles. The math worked out well since I walked an extra one and some back and forth in the driveway as I took out the trash (and then realized due to the holiday tomorrow isn't actually trash day. Oh well.)

While I ran I saw the Good Year Blimp in the sky hovering over the city -- filming an enclosed hockey arena. I imagined that they saw me in the distance doing hill repeats and started to film me for their commercial break footage. That was my motivator. I mean the blimp was very far in the distance but I figured they would have super zoom cameras and of course would just zoom in on me. I was later disappointed to see my grandiose imaginings were inaccurate. But it definitely help me sprint a hard hill 10x.

I did 20 push ups inside when I was done. And intended to do more but then I sat down and watched the Pens game. ...maybe I'll do a few more things before the night is over...
